Odessa is a quaint little town, on the southern edge of Big Stone County, along the prairie lands of Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge. The old water tower still stands on the hill near the old school house grounds that once was, and the bell from the schoolhouse now rests on the lawn of the City Hall. The streets of Odessa are still non paved. The old jail, today listed on the National Registry, still stands near the middle of the town.
Every morning the men of Odessa gather at the local cafe for coffee and shake dice, while mid afternoon the women gather there for coffee and socializing. On weekends throughout the year, City Hall fills with families and friends for wedding dances, reunions, birthdays and corporate annual meetings. Following weekend church services in Odessa, their members gather at the cafe for what they call “Lutheran Hour” Brunch. During the week, area fathers and their sons pair up to shoot some hoop, and play a game of basketball on the city hall’s gym floor.
On the 4th of July, the residence hold their annual Lawnmower Parade followed by noon potluck in the city park. Throughout the year, three women, of the community, volunteer their time and efforts in taking pride in beautifying the grounds of the City Hall.
